Num livro já várias vezes aqui chamado à colação, The Southern Tradition - The Achievement and Limitations of an American Conservatism, em cujas menos de 150 páginas se concentra uma considerável soma de observações e reflexões muito penetrantes sobre a "direita", e não só americana, Eugene D. Genovese, um ex-marxista, diz o seguinte sobre Buckley:
"It was the achievement of William Buckley in ideological work and of Ronald Reagan in party politics to forge a right-wing coalition out of disparate elements that stand at opposite philosophical poles."

E depois de referir as razões do apoio dos conservadores sulistas a Reagan, acrescenta:

"But southern conservatives underst(ood) the contradiction that neither Ronald Reagan nor George Bush nor even William Buckley has faced squarely. Capitalism has historically been the greatest solvent of traditional social relations. Thus, Marx and Engels praised capitalism and the bourgeosie for their destructive impact on traditional society and culture."
